The old English proverb “Health is wealth” does not seem to do justice to the importance of health. Surely the importance of health is much more than wealth. The proverb is a highly materialistic evaluation of the importance of health. In truth, good health is the key to a good life which is something not even wealth can guarantee.
So what is good health? A person can be said to possess good health when he is free from any sort of physical or mental disease. This then becomes the most priced possession for man and something that even money can’t buy. Money can buy you medicines but it can’t buy you health just like money can buy you books but it can’t buy you knowledge.
The charms of life are contained within the perimeters of maintaining good health. A deteriorating body and mind is something that snatches away the charms of life. The sad thing is that most of take good health for granted. It is only when we are struck with some sort of ailment that we realize how important good health is and how ungrateful we have been all our lives for taking it for granted. It becomes clear then that health is worth even more than your wealth.
A sound mind needs a sound environment. This is why people with sound physical health are more liable to possess a sound mind. The more diseased the environment of the mind becomes the more it starts to have an affect on its health. Eventually your mind becomes sickly as well. A healthy man generally has a positive outlook towards life. This motivates him to stay upbeat and work long hours in order to be productive. He is not tied down by a weak body. Healthy students are also known to possess sharp minds.
Although good health is something that we would all like to have it is something that does not come on demand. In order to achieve and maintain good health there is a certain guide of do’s and don’ts that you have to follow. The most important thing is your food intake. If you want to achieve a healthy body then you have to make sure that you have a nutritious food intake.
The next most important thing is the air that we breathe. Open air environments are better than claustrophobic environments. Exercise is yet another extremely important tool that has to be utilized for the purpose of achieving and maintaining good health. One should also seek to balance out their sleeping habits as this will also contribute to the purpose.
While being constant in the above mentioned do’s one should also seek to avoid certain things. Bad habits like smoking and drinking have to change as they are slow killers of man. Overeating is another thing that you would want to avoid. An inconsistent routine makes it difficult to maintain good health and so does a low energy level.
If the English proverb were to do justice to the value of health it should be rephrased as “Health is true wealth”.
